Abu al-Qasim al-Nasrabadhi said to Abu Amr ibn Ubayd, "I am of the view that when people gather, it is better for them to engage with a speaker saying good things than to gossip. Abu Amr replied, "Pretentiousness in listening, where one displays a state not truly within oneself, is worse than thirty years of backbiting or the like."
