  1. "Then they advanced against Khalid, but the Euphrates lay between them. The Byzantines said to Khalid: Cross over to us. And Khalid said to the Byzantines: No — you cross over. So the Byzantines crossed over to them, and that was in the middle of Dhu al-Qa'da in the year twelve. There they fought a great and terrible battle, until God routed the hosts of the Byzantines and the Muslims were able to pursue them."

  2. "nor would I untie a banner that the Messenger of God tied. So Usama set out, and he would not pass by a tribe that was minded to apostatize but they said: "Were it not that these people have strength, men such as these would never have gone out from among them. Let us leave them until they meet the Byzantines." Then they met the Byzantines, routed them and killed them, and returned safely, so the tribes held firm upon Islam."
