How the scholars invoke An-Nūr.

  1. "was a respected leader among the Arab nobility. He belonged to the Daws clan from the Azd tribe and was nicknamed "Dhu al-Nur." He embraced Islam before the Hijra in Mecca. Hisham ibn al-Kalbi narrated that Al-Tufayl was called "Dhu al-Nur" because he once said to the Prophet, "O Messenger of Allah! Daws has been overcome by fornication, so pray to Allah against them." The Prophet responded, "O Allah, guide Daws." Al-Tufayl then asked for a sign to aid him, and the Prophet prayed, "O Allah, illuminate for him...""

"Sayf claimed that it was in this year that Umar ibn al-Khattab wrote a letter of command over this expedition for Suraqa ibn Amr, nicknamed Dhu al-Nur, setting over his vanguard Abd al-Rahman ibn Rabi'a, who is also called Dhu al-Nur, over one of the two wings Hudhayfa ibn Asid, and over the other Bukayr ibn Abdullah al-Laythi, who had gone ahead of them to al-Bab, and over the division of spoils Salman ibn Rabi'a."
